TK-8 Math COach
 alexandra thomas

Alex Thomas, the WCSD TK-8 Math Coach, works directly with teachers. She covers curriculum, modeling, and new teaching techniques. Her goal? Discover new, updated ways to support both student and teacher.
Education is shifting. We need to be educating students to solve for problems that we can’t even conceive of yet.  We need to help them develop skills to ‘think out of the box’ and to use multiple methods. And most importantly, we need them to appreciate that ‘mistakes’ are opportunities for learning, not dead ends.  We want students to break problems into pieces, and then persevere through the pieces to get to a solution.”

With WCEF funding, the Acalanes Union High School District (AUHSD) prioritizes wellness for its students. In 2017, in response to the rise of teen anxiety, depression, suicide, stress and emerging concerns with high vaping and e-cigarette usage, AUHSD opened its first Wellness Center on the Las Lomas campus. Today, all students at four campuses benefit from Wellness Centers.
We are trying to de-stigmatize mental health so students can get the support they need and not have their learning disrupted. It gets stressful in high school and that impacts mental health.”
For the past four years, donations to WCEF have been a major source of financial support to accommodate the growing demand for services for students and families at the Wellness Center. The WCEF Board is proud of its commitment to increase staffing hours from 40% in 2018-19 to 100% in 2020-21. Our students need this support.
The Las Lomas Wellness Center offers individual/group counseling, crisis support, and other interventions aimed at addressing a multitude of teen-related issues: stress, depression, bullying, gender questions, grief, drug/alcohol abuse, and anxiety. Wellness staff also support student clubs, wellness initiatives and the counseling staff.

Additionally, the Center is not just for students. They offer group sessions for parents/guardians and training for teachers and staff.
WCEF sees great value in getting students the support they need on campus when they need it.

What Your Gifts to WCEF Have Made Possible This School Year
If you’re one of the almost 1,000 families who have donated to WCEF this school year, we stand and applaud you. You have made countless opportunities possible everyday by investing in the education of 5,100 students. Bravo! Here’s just a sampling of what your donations have done this academic year:

Las Lomas Wellness Center: A recent 2019 study revealed 7 in 10 teens believe anxiety and depression are a debilitating phenomenon. This year, WCEF increased hours of the Wellness Coordinator from 40% to 80% to better meet the needs of the students, manage interns, improve programs offered and better facilitate student clubs associated with wellness. The Wellness Center offers individual/group counseling, crisis support, and other interventions aimed at addressing a multitude of teen-related issues:  stress, depression, bullying, gender questions, grief, drug/alcohol abuse, and anxiety. Additionally, the Center is not just for students. They offer group sessions for parents/guardians and training for teachers and staff. Donations to WCEF are instrumental in the growth of services offered for both students and families/guardians. Middle School electives and additional offerings continue to grow:
From adding a section of ABC Innovations based on student interest as well as Spanish to the 6th grade wheel at WCI to increased hours of after school homework help/academic support at both Tice and WCI, more donations to WCEF means greater offerings and flexibility. Students in middle school (and all grade levels) also benefit from WCI's credentialed librarian and research databases.

Music, Art, Science for all TK-5: In the last three years, WCEF increased funding for weekly Art, Music and Science Lab from 24 weeks to 36 weeks, meaning our TK-5 students receive a full year of STEAM education. That’s more paintings to frame, more tinkering time, more opportunities to sing...important growth we are incredibly proud of.

Google Expeditions is soaring into WCI through the Teacher Grant Program! Thanks to our anonymous donor for matching gifts in December and to all of you who came to our aid and donated. We can’t wait to see how our students immerse themselves in this cutting-edge technology this year and in the years to come.

Supporting your child and all 5,100 students, teachers and staff are WCEF’s priority in 2020 and we look forward to announcing new key initiatives, including a survey, to see how best to support our community in the coming month. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @ wcefk12 to stay in the know, and see what you can make possible at our schools!

Best,
