It's INTERNational literacy day! And we are celebrating you!
Beginning in 2009, state funding for public school libraries became “flexible,” meaning funds could be shifted and spent on anything. Fast forward to today and less than 10% of California public schools have a credentialed librarian.
Reduced hours. Out of date books. No weekly library time. It’s the reality for many public schools. Fortunately, donations to the Walnut Creek Education Foundation (WCEF) help create larger buckets of funding for our districts. With this increased funding, a credentialed librarian at Walnut Creek Intermediate, and weekly library time for TK-5, are a reality for our students.
Access to the internet and required devices for students has placed school libraries at the center of an information explosion. Students need help navigating and evaluating the information they find. Credentialed librarians like WCI’s Jen DeMonte help students access and assess information, all while teaching them to use information safely and ethically.
From book recommendations to citation tools and virtual field trips, libraries create a functional space for today’s student. In honor of International Literacy Day on September 8, we want to say thank you to our donors for seeing the value in a credentialed librarian and library programs for all.
