2008-2009 PROGRAMS FUNDED BY WCEF FOR THE WALNUT CREEK SCHOOL DISTRICT’S ELEMENTARY AND INTERMEDIATE SCHOOLS, AND LAS LOMAS HIGH SCHOOL

Elementary School Programs Funded

WCEF fully funds standards-based weekly instruction in visual art, music and physical education for all K-5 students at Buena Vista, Indian Valley, Murwood, Parkmead and Walnut Heights Elementary Schools. All of the instructional specialists for these programs meet on a monthly basis to participate in professional development and to discuss assessment, standards and curriculum. These programs allow classroom teachers time to take part in grade-level collaboration, a vital component in a teacher's continuing education and a priority of the WCSD.

Visual Art Program
The visual art program is focused on the process of art, getting students comfortable with working through their projects, and viewing "mistakes" as learning opportunities.
Students learn about the proper use of materials, specific techniques, great artists and art history. The standards are very detailed and comprehensive for each grade level. Students study artistic styles ranging from pointillism to still life and impression.

Music Program
While teaching vocabulary, singing and music appreciation, the overall goal is to develop a life-long love of music. There are clearly defined learning standards for each grade.

Physical Education Program
The P.E. program is based on state challenge standards and standardized state testing is administered in the fifth grade. Instructors are responsible for the implementation of dance standards and teach dance and movement. Classes also emphasize the importance of being active and staying active to maintain good health, physically and mentally, throughout students' lives. Personal achievement is appropriately encouraged and sportsmanship is stressed.
