Las Lomas Student Receives
Michael W. De Sa Memorial Scholarship

(Walnut Creek, Calif., May 29, 2008) - - The second annual Michael W. De Sa Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $2,000.00 was award last night by Mike De Sa's daughter, Caitlin to Las Lomas High School Senior, Jessica Goodman.

Goodman was chosen among 12 Las Lomas Seniors who applied for the scholarship. Her achievements exemplified the scholarship criterion, which seeks a well-rounded graduate of the Walnut Creek schools (attending K-12) who has nurtured life's passions both in school and outside the confines of academia, through service in the community and other pursuits.

Goodman's plans after graduation is to attend Cal State Northridge to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. During her time at Las Lomas High School, Goodman wrote for the Walnut Creek Journal and was Teen LIP board member for the Timeout section of the Contra Costa Times. She worked with Contra Costa Times political editor, Lisa Vorderbruggen on her senior project, and she also interned at KKDV Radio as a promotions assistant. She developed and then served in the position of Technology Officer on the Las Lomas Student Leadership Team and also spearheaded the first Las Lomas High School video newscast. Those that know and work with Goodman are struck by her singularity of purpose in the journalism and broadcasting field, and that she refuses to give up when she is set on a goal.

When Walnut Creek Superintendent, Mike De Sa passed away in 2006, his family requested that donations be made in his name to the Walnut Creek Education Foundation (WCEF). De Sa's family, wife Lisa and children Caitlin and Sam, proposed using a portion of the funds to start a memorial scholarship fund to be administered by WCEF and awarded to seniors at Las Lomas High School.
